    Holiday Spirits 2

December can feel like the movie Groundhog’s Day at times, donning the same clothes, going to the same parties every year. But you know what can change all of that? Fancy Boozes, that’s what. Here are two more recipes to freshen up your Holiday Spirit. The Oatmeal Cookie Some may know this as a shot, others appreciate the sophisticated shape of the martini glass it is served in. Either way, be careful with the amount of alcohol in this one. They go down fast and easy. 1.5 oz Bailey’s (Irish Cream) 3/4 oz Buttershots 1/4 oz Goldschlager 1/2-1 oz cream cinnamon & sugar Option: rim the glass with a mixture of…

    Holiday Spirits

I love a nice cocktail: the kind with quality liquor and good balance. As big as the cocktail revolution has been in the past few years, it is surprising to me that while there are plenty of “fancy” drink recipes out there, many are sticky-sweet and faddish, lacking the depth of real “spirits.” Dare I say, Holiday Spirits? I’m not saying that every cocktail has to be made with Top Shelf brands, but some nuance of flavor is nice.  While a chocolate martini is fine and dandy, I prefer the ones that make me feel like I’m indulging in a high-end dark chocolate truffle, not smearing my face with squeezable Hershey’s…

Happy Hour Explorers: The 5 Spot

Happy Hour in Savannah isn’t found solely in downtown. To get away from the crowds and the tourists and still have a decent and affordable afternoon is totally doable. Enter Habersham Village and The 5 Spot. This is another offering from the Gaslight Group, which also owns B. Matthews, Blowin’ Smoke, and Abe’s on Lincoln.       But the purpose of this restaurant seems to be the neighborhood watering hole. The happy hour deals are great: Monday through Friday, 3-6 pm. They offer $3 domestic bottles, $1 off draft beer, $4 glasses of wine, $4 wells. In addition, each day of the week offers a special, like Martini Mondays where…

Happy Hour Explorers: In Vino Veritas

Oh, wine. Delicious, infinitely varied wine. While Savannah is known as a cocktail sort of town, and Napa is known as a wine sort of town, it doesn’t mean that you can’t find a great deal in Savannah for a wine-based Happy Hour.     In Vino Veritas has got you covered. From the Latin, “In Wine, Truth,” this bar has a truly a good Happy Hour. Monday through Friday, 4-7 pm, 1/2 off bottles. At decent price points, that means you can obtain a $25 bottle of wine for $12.50. A bottle usually serves 5 and a half glasses, so while I could complete the math for you, I…

    Happy Hour Explorers: Hitch

We have another new restaurant in Savannah, a changeable smorgasbord of choices in our downtown area. Hitch is the second effort from the gentlemen who run Bay Street’s Treylor Park. While Hitch is occupying the difficult corner of Drayton and Liberty, it is serving some favorites from Treylor Park as well as trying new things. Current experiments seem to include finding a good Happy Hour. They seem to have settled on Monday-Friday Power Hour from 4-6 pm, which boasts 1/2 off all draft beer. We went on a Wednesday, which is also a 1/2 off wine bottles day. Fortunately, Hitch does have some of the tasty brews from local breweries…

    Happy Hour Explorers: Public Kitchen

The Public Kitchen is a busy place. At the corner of Bull and Liberty, there is always someone going somewhere in Savannah. That sounds like a ridiculous thing to say, but I’m serious. There’s a trolley, or a walking tour, or a wedding party passing by. Sitting outside (when the weather is bearable) to people-watch the traffic is pretty great. Want to know what else is great? Public Kitchen has a Happy Hour. Monday through Thursday, 3-6 pm, they serve $4 craft beers, $5 glasses of wine, and $6 specialty cocktails and martinis. Specialty cocktails? Don’t mind if I do! They also serve a good snack menu to go with your…

    Happy Hour Explorers: 9 Drayton

Nestled in downtown Savannah on Drayton, almost to Bay Street, is 9 Drayton. In the place that I will forever think of as Zunzi’s 2, is a new, upscale restaurant. The menu looks pretty fancy, and when in a fancy bar, I order a fancy thing. The Happy Hour at 9 Drayton is Tuesday through Sunday, 4-6 pm. Their website claims they have “fabulous drink specials,” but from our exploration, we found that the Happy Hour deal was only $2 off drinks. This means that while the beer is affordable, specialty cocktails are still going to run about $10. I chose the Little Hummingbird, which is a champagne cocktail, because it was a…

    Happy Hour Explorers: Moon River

On a hot day in downtown Savannah, walking by Moon River Brewing Company’s beer garden can be a blessing or a curse. With overhead fans and open picnic benches, stopping for a quick drink is a pleasure. If you have places to be, however, the promising oasis is nothing but temptation. If the stroll happens to occur between the hours of 4-7 pm daily, then you are in luck, for the strain won’t be on your pocketbook.   Here’s the deal: $1 off draft beer, 1/2 off house wines, and 1/2 off well liquor. If you just need something to quench your thirst for cheap, might I recommend a gin…

    Happy Hour Explorers: Ordinary Pub

After so much adventure, coming back home to catalog some of the great things about Savannah is relaxing–especially when it involves Happy Hour. A single doorway on Broughton Street with a bicycle etched on the glass brings a thirsty Explorer to The Ordinary Pub. If this Explorer happens in Monday through Friday between 3 pm – 7 pm, deals are available. (The Ordinary Pub website says Happy Hour is seven days a week). Deals like $3 drafts, $4 wells as a double or 2 for 1, and then there are daily cocktail specials. When I visited, one of the $5 cocktail special was a Moscow Mule. Who doesn’t love the bite…

    Happy Hour Explorers: El-Rocko Lounge

Listen up, Savannah hep-cats. Put on your skinny jeans, Beatle boots, and slap on some white lipstick to go have a cocktail at the El-Rocko Lounge. Decked out in gold, gold, and gold, there is so much to look at while you sip.   Happy Hour is 5-8 pm, where a PBR is $2, Jameson/Jager is $3, Domestic beer is $3, and most importantly, the Draught Cocktails are $6. Aside from the atmosphere of a Northern Soul bar from the late sixties, the bold artwork of the pachinko machines, and the photo booth, it’s the draught cocktails that set this place apart. Mixed ahead of time and aged in a…
